Three months ago, I quit my job and started looking for an employer. Finding the ideal is very difficult. The requirements are about the same as when choosing a partner for a relationship. At work, we spend 40 hours a week, we live there, no matter how menacing it sounds. But ideally, this should not sound menacing, but rather.
I have repeatedly made the wrong choice, convincing myself that this is just a job. Such beliefs always ended unsatisfactorily.
Having understood my “intuition”, by which I usually made the decision about choosing a job, I made a list of ten rules by which I conduct a real test drive for every potential employer.
1. Rate the way to the office
Think about it, would you like to start this route every day? Will the surrounding reality aggravate your bad mood if something has managed to upset you? Will this road spoil a good mood? Look around in the office: do you want to stay there or run away from there? Is there a place where you can hide in the moments of a creative crisis or a rush?
This rule is important to me, but I can neglect it if the employer unconditionally fits all the other points listed below.
2. Get to know your future boss
For a moment, imagine the following: if you happen to see him at the mall on a weekend, will you come up to say hello or try to hide? I saw this rule in one book (it seems, Gaya Kawasaki), and now every time I ask myself this question. If you are hiding mentally, then it's time to hide from the horizon and in reality. No need to force yourself even because of your salary. Sooner or later you will leave such a job without strength, morally destroyed. Or even worse - unsure of themselves as a specialist, if the boss turns out to be a boor.
The leader should not infuriate at least in the early stages. Best of all, if he has a chance to become a role model for you. You should want to listen to him not out of a desire to curry favor, but because of sincere respect.
3. Rate the test item
Are you ready to repeat it for free? If such tasks were given to you at the university, promising only credit for them, it would be interesting to complete them within a year, would you be willing to pay for such training? Do you have jitters? Do you feel unbearable boredom, black anguish or irrevocable despair at the sight of the assignment? It is important. Because about this you will do every day.
No "tomorrow will be better than yesterday" and "horny, falling in love." Tomorrow you will do the same, only not at home for a cup of tea. And the day after tomorrow, however, too.
4. Show pay racism
All work "in the gray" - and nothing, you say. A black salary, as a rule, generally more. So I thought, until I was in an unpleasant position. But this non-free lesson taught me "blow milk." For me, an undocumented relationship with an employer is just like giving birth and raising a child without marriage. On the wave of emotions, it seems that love is eternal, that man is eternal, and obligations are unbreakable.
In the “gray” scheme of work, from the point of view of the law and the employer, you are completely vulnerable. Moreover, it is not necessary that the boss be a cattle. He may simply not have free money for you. Neither this month nor the next.
5. Find out what you can take out of work for yourself.
Why do you need a position where you can’t learn anything? Not always a salary is just money. If you learn to use some software in the process of work, make an interesting project, your value in the labor market will increase.
This is a return on the investment of your labor, for which you have not yet bought an apartment or an air ticket. But time will pass, and your skills will be cashed.
6. Do not waste time
I very often refuse repeated interviews and test tasks if I feel that something is wrong. For most, I look like an unemployed, irrational silly woman. But this is my way of saving time. Do not squeeze out all the juices, and, God forbid, do not drag on yourself the burden of unnecessary responsibility.
Do not be afraid to merge, if you know for sure that you do not want to continue. You do not owe anything to yourself. Some processes do not need to be brought to the final, and for this it should not be embarrassing.
7. View company projects and products
If the quality seems shameful to you - run. Do not think that you will fly in as a superman and pull everything to a fundamentally new level. Of course, only if you were not invited to the post of Superman. If the whole company goes online through Internet Explorer and makes presentations with Comic Sans the colors of the rainbow, then there's nothing to be done. Reforms will quickly turn you into an “enemy of the people."
Remember what torment Peter the Great went through in his relations with the boyars. Remember how Galileo paid. If you don’t have the opportunity to chop heads for refusing to chop beards, then leave people in their cozy little world and go to those who have turned the earth before you. Until you were burned at the stake of the corporate Inquisition.
